1. WHAT'S IN THIS ELECTRONIC BOOK

Legal Guide to Web & Software Development is a file you use with
software programs that are already installed on your computer.
When you successfully expand the archive file SFTC.ZIP, save it
to a folder or directory on your hard disk (we recommend saving
it to C:\SoftDev). Since this is not a software program in and
of itself, you will not run a set up or create icons, and no
icons or program groups are added to the Start Menu (Windows) or
your computer's desktop (Macintosh).

The expanded archive contains all components of this electronic
book:

* README.TXT, the instructions on how to use this product (which
you are viewing right now).
* SoftDev.PDF, the main file with the contents of this
electronic book. This file is in PDF format (portable document
format) and must be used in conjunction with Acrobat Reader or
Adobe Reader (see below).
* FORMS, a directory (or folder) containing the files listed
below.

PLEASE NOTE: In some places, the text of this book refers to a
"forms CD" included at the back of the book. This is because
this book was originally produced for distribution in printed
form. The new electronic format of this book means no CD is
necessary. Instead, the Forms Directory mentioned here contains
all the necessary files.

2. REQUIREMENTS FOR USE

A. You will need Acrobat Reader or Adobe Reader to open, read,
and print out SoftDev.PDF (the main file). Reader is available
for all types of Windows and Macintosh systems. If you don't
already have this software, you can download it for free at
www.adobe.com.

B. You must have a word processor that "reads" RTF files to open,
read, and print out the RTF form files.

* WINDOWS 2000, XP, and Vista users all have word processors that
read RTF files.

* MACINTOSH users need Word 5.0 or greater or WordPerfect 2.1 or
greater.

3. USING THIS ELECTRONIC BOOK

This electronic book is in PDF format and is intended to be
viewed using Acrobat Reader or Adobe Reader. Your best source
for help using Reader is Reader's online help (accessible
through Reader's "Help" menu). Below, however, you will find
some specific tips on using Nolo eBooks.

A. Opening the Book

Find the main file SoftDev.PDF in the directory/folder you
created when you initially expanded the Zip archive file.
The default folder is C:\SoftDev. Double click the file
SoftDev.PDF. This should launch Acrobat Reader or Adobe Reader
and open the electronic book.

B. Navigating Within This Electronic Book

Standard Acrobat Reader and Adobe Reader navigation features
allow you to browse through a PDF with relative ease. If you
do not know how to navigate within a PDF file, please consult
Reader's online help (accessible through Reader's "Help" menu).

In addition to the standard Reader navigation, we've added the
following features to your eBook to make it easier to use:

1. The Electronic Table Of Contents (Bookmarks)
When you first open the book, you will see the electronic table
of contents at the left of the screen. Reader calls these
headings "bookmarks." By clicking on a bookmark, you can
instantly jump to the corresponding page of the book.

2. Links
Most Nolo references in this eBook are links, which means that
by clicking on them you can jump immediately to the indicated
web site. Nolo weblinks are colored blue to make them
easily recognized. Clicking a Nolo weblink will launch
your web browser and take you to a page on the Nolo web site.

NOTE: URL links to non-Nolo websites have not been provided.
This is because things change rapidly and without warning on
the Internet, so we can't guarantee that all URLs are still
live or accurate. You can, however, copy the text of a non-Nolo
URL and paste it into your browser. (See D. "Copying Text,"
below.)

Please consult Reader's online help (accessible through Reader's
"Help" menu) if you need further assistance using bookmarks
or links.

C. Finding Specific Text

Acrobat Reader and Adobe Reader allow you to find part of a word,
a complete word, or multiple words of text in your eBook. The
methods for doing this vary between different versions of Reader.
Please consult Reader's help (accessible through Reader's "Help"
menu) if you do not know how to find specific text in your version
of Reader.

D. Copying Text

You can copy text in Acrobat Reader or Adobe Reader as follows:
1. Select the Text Select tool from the toolbar.
2. Use your mouse to highlight the text you want to copy.
3. Press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Macintosh)+ C or choose
   Edit > Copy.
4. Paste the copied text into the appropriate application (usually
Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Macintosh) + V).

If you do not know how to paste copied text, consult the online
help or call the technical support department for the application
in which you are having trouble. NOLO CANNOT ANSWER QUESTIONS ON
HOW TO USE OTHER COMPANIES' APPLICATIONS.

E. Changing the Screen Magnification

Acrobat Reader and Adobe Reader allow you to change the screen
magnification in a variety of ways. The methods for changing zoom
vary between different versions of Reader. Please consult Reader's
online help (accessible through Reader's "Help" menu) if you do
not know how to change screen magnification in your version of
Reader.

For additional instructions on how to use Reader to view, browse,
zoom in and print out PDF documents, access Reader's online help
from the "Help" menu. NOLO CANNOT ANSWER QUESTIONS ON HOW TO USE
OTHER COMPANIES' APPLICATIONS.

4. FILLING IN RTF FORMS USING YOUR WORD PROCESSOR

The form files in rich text format (RTF) can be read by most
recent word processing programs including recent versions of MS
Word for Windows and Macintosh, WordPad for Windows, and
recent versions of WordPerfect for Windows and Macintosh.

To create your own documents you must: (1) open a file in your
word processor; (2) edit the form by filling in the required
information, following the instructions in the electronic book;
(3) print it out; (4) save your revised file.

FOR QUESTIONS ON HOW TO USE YOUR WORD PROCESSOR, CALL YOUR WORD
PROCESSOR'S TECHNICAL SUPPORT DEPARTMENT. NOLO DOES NOT ANSWER
WORD PROCESSOR QUESTIONS.

Step 1: Opening a Form File

All forms can be directly accessed from Acrobat Reader or Adobe
Reader. The RTF files are indexed in the electronic table of
contents (bookmarks) of the main book file (SoftDev.PDF) under
the heading "Forms From CD-ROM." Simply click on the form you wish
to open. If you have a word processor installed that "understands" RTF,
Reader should launch that program and open the file you selected.

If you have problems opening the form files from Reader, launch
your word processing program, then try opening the files again
from Reader, as described above. If you are still having problems
you will have to open the form files from the FORMS directory.
Use My Computer or Windows Explorer (Windows 2000, XP, or Vista)
or the Finder (Macintosh) to go to the SoftDev\FORMS directory.
Then, double click on the specific RTF form file you want to open.
If the file isn't loaded, or if it contains garbage characters,
use your word processor's "Open" command. This opens a dialog box
in which you will tell the program (1) the type of file you want
to open (*.RTF) and (2) the location and name of the file (you will
need to navigate through the directory tree to get to
C:\SoftDev\FORMS).

For a list of all of the forms included in the FORMS directory,
see "1. What's in this Electronic Book" above.

Step 2: Editing Your Document

Fill in the appropriate information according to the instructions
in SoftDev.PDF. Brackets are used to indicate where you need to
enter your information; inside the brackets are instructions
on what information needs to be inserted. To find these quickly,
use your word processor's search command to go to the next blank
by searching for a left bracket character ([). BE SURE TO DELETE
THE BRACKETED INSTRUCTIONS FROM YOUR EDITED DOCUMENT.
If you do not know how to use your word processor to edit a
document, you will need to look through the manual for your word
processing program -- again, Nolo's technical support department
will NOT be able to help you with the use of your word processing
program.

Where there are alternative clauses or language within a form, be
sure to choose the one that applies to your situation and DELETE
THE CLAUSES THAT DO NOT APPLY. In some instances, you will have
to renumber the paragraphs that follow deleted clauses. Also, be
sure to delete any optional language you do not wish to include.

Step 3: Printing Out the Document

Use your word processor's Print command to print out your
document. If you do not know how to use your word processor to
print a document, you will need to look through the manual for
your word processing program -- once again, Nolo's technical
support department will NOT be able to help you with the use of
your word processing program.

Step 4: Saving Your Document

After filling in the form, use the "save as" command to give the
file a new name and save it. These files are "read-only" so that
you cannot just save your document without first renaming it.
This is for your protection, so that you will be able to create
additional documents using the same form files. If you do not
know how to use your word processor to save a document, you will
need to look through the manual for your word processing
program -- don't forget! Nolo's technical support department
will NOT be able to help you with the use of your word processing
program.

5. PRINTING

Any or all pages in this electronic book can be printed out using
Acrobat Reader or Adobe Reader. Here's how:

A. Printing a single page

  1. Using the bookmarks in the electronic table of
contents (see above), go to the page you want to print out.
  2. Choose Print from the Reader File menu. This will open
     the Print dialog box.
  3. In the "Print Range" section of the Print dialog box,
select "Current page", then click OK.

B. Printing all pages

  1. Choose Print from the Reader File menu. This will open
     the Print dialog box.
  2. In the "Print Range" section of the Print dialog box,
select "All Pages", then click OK.

C. Printing selected pages

  1. Using the bookmarks in the electronic table of
contents (see above), go to the first page you want to
print out. Note the page number, which is displayed in the
status bar at the bottom of the Reader window.

NOTE: be sure to use the number outside of the parentheses
when selecting a print range. For example, if the status
bar displays "7/2 (124 of 436)," you will want to enter
     "7/2" to designate that page.

  2. Now, go to the last page you want to print out, and
note its page number as well.
  3. Choose Print from the Reader File menu. This will open
     the Print dialog box.
  4. In the "Print Range" section of the Print dialog box,
select "Pages", enter the first and last page numbers from
     above, then click OK.

NOTE: This eBook has an equal number of odd and even pages. To
accomplish this, numerous blank pages have been included
throughout, usually at the end of chapters. This makes it
possible to do "duplex printing" (printing on front and back side
of a single sheet of paper). Duplex printing requires Acrobat
Reader 4.0 or higher. For details on how to print duplex,
consult Reader's online help. NOLO TECH SUPPORT CANNOT ANSWER
DUPLEX PRINTING QUESTIONS.
